Empowering young single mothers and teenagers through tailoring skills training is irreplaceable service that Kayone has developed. Katakwi being a rural area has a number of young girls who didn't go far with education. Due to poverty and other situational reasons some young girls found themselves as mother. It's an irreversible situation whereby some of them are not accepted by the family as getting pregnant at home seems to be a shame to the family according to the tradition. These young girls end up by themselves without any support for themselves and their little ones; that's how Kayine got an idea of empowering them with skills like tailoring. With help of other young experienced girls, we have found ways to make the skills development process more personalized and effective by taking the following simple steps
1. Assess Individual Needs and Interests
-We conduct in-depth assessments to understand each young mother's unique goals, strengths, barriers, and learning styles.
- We identify their existing skills, prior experience, and aspirations to inform the training curriculum.
2. Offer Customized Curriculum
- We design flexible, modular training programs that can be customized to each participant's needs; as some members have very young babies, the program has to incorporate also those mothers so that they don't miss out a lesson.
-We provide self-paced options, one-on-one coaching, and hands-on learning opportunities. This demand more efforts and patience on the side of the trainer because some learners are already frustrated by their own issues, their need not only training but also a bit counselling.
3. Foster Peer-to-Peer Connections
-We create opportunities for young single mothers to learn from and support each other.
-We facilitate peer mentoring, cohort-based learning, and community-building activities.
In conclusion, skills training programs can empower young single mothers to develop in-demand competencies, gain work experience, and build the confidence and support networks they need to thrive and support their own families.
